Natural gas and mineral oil also play an important role in the region. A first exploratory drilling in 1938 confirmed the supposition that there were rich subterranean oil deposits here. Mineral oil and natural gas have been selectively extracted since the 1950s. The region actually numbers amongst the most productive in Europe. Both in the museum and on the adjoining outdoor site numerous exhibits are shown – from exploration through to extraction and refining of the liquid gold.
